Restaurant Review: Taïm

222 Waverly Place
(between West 11th Street and Perry Street)
Greenwich Village, Manhattan

Vegiboys Rating (2.5/4)

Off the bustle of 6th Avenue, on the quieter, tree-lined Waverly Place, Taïm’s small storefront serves up falafel to their hungry West Village patrons. Taïm is crowded and has limited seating (with just a few indoor counter seats and a couple of benches under the street trees outside), so most of their orders are for carry-out.

Joined by Lauren Alzos, with grand plans to carry our falafel dinners to the newly opened section of the High Line, we placed our order at Taïm’s no-nonsense counter (whose attendants bordered on being rudely abrupt), got served quickly, and then found ourselves eating the meal under scaffolding in front of a Greenwich Village townhouse to escape a sudden downpour.

For my meal, I went all-out with a mixed platter that included three different falafels, hummus, tabouli salad, Israeli salad, and a zahatar-covered whole wheat pita. Everything tasted good, though the zahatar (an under-appreciated herbal blend) on the bread was the only thing that really stood out for us. The falafels really didn’t seem very distinctive from each other – each was certainly tasty, but tasted much like the others.

Brian went with a falafel sandwich. Despite choosing the spiciest of the falafel options, we didn’t find there to be any heat in the sandwich at all. Again, it was simply good falafel, but not anything distinguishing.

Lauren, having already eaten, chose a fruit/Thai basil smoothie which was really refreshing, the basil adding a lemon-citrus taste to the fruit blend. The lemonades Brian and I had were overly sweetened.

So though we enjoyed the food, we didn’t find anything that surprised us (just good, basic falafel). Being more of a takeout venue than a sit-down establishment and with a cold reception from the staff, we didn’t feel particularly inspired by our experience, though at $10 each, the price is on par with other falafel houses.
